Felofey Is GST and MSME Registered: How to Verify Any Online Shop's Numbers in Two Minutes

Anyone can put a logo and a phone number on a website. A government registration number is harder to fake, because you can check it against a public record that the shop does not control.

Felofey has two, and both are printed at the bottom of every page. This post shows how to check them, and how to do the same for any other online shop before you pay.

Felofey's registration numbers

• GSTIN: 07JWZPS2035H1ZR
• Udyam (MSME) registration: UDYAM-DL-11-0153935

The GSTIN is the business's Goods and Services Tax number. The Udyam number is its registration as a micro, small or medium enterprise with the Ministry of MSME.

How to verify a GSTIN

• Go to the official GST portal, gst.gov.in.
• Choose Search Taxpayer, then Search by GSTIN/UIN.
• Type the 15-character number, complete the captcha and search.
• The portal shows the registered name, the state, the date of registration and whether the registration is Active.

Two things to look for: the status should be Active, and the state should match where the shop says it is. For Felofey that is Delhi.

One thing that surprises people: the legal name on the portal is often a person's name, not the brand. That is normal for a small business owned by an individual. The brand appears as the trade name where one has been recorded.

Reading a GSTIN

A GSTIN is not a random string. Taking ours, 07JWZPS2035H1ZR:

• 07 is the state code. 07 is Delhi; 27 is Maharashtra; 29 is Karnataka.
• The next ten characters are the PAN of the person or company that owns the business.
• The thirteenth character counts registrations under that PAN in the state. A 1 means it is the first.
• The last two characters are a default letter and a check character that catches typing mistakes.

So even before you open the portal, the first two digits tell you which state a shop is registered in. If a shop says it is in Jaipur and its GSTIN starts with 07, ask why.

How to verify a Udyam number

• Go to the official Udyam portal, udyamregistration.gov.in.
• Open the Print / Verify menu and choose Verify Udyam Registration Number.
• Enter the number in the form UDYAM-XX-00-0000000, complete the captcha and verify.
• The portal shows the registered details of the enterprise, including its name and where it is located.

In a Udyam number, the two letters are the state (DL for Delhi) and the two digits after them are the district code.

What a registration proves, and what it does not

It is worth being exact about this, because registration numbers get oversold.

What it proves

• A real person or company stands behind the shop, with a PAN on record.
• The business is known to the tax department.
• The state it claims to be in is the state it is registered in.
• You can ask for a GST invoice.

What it does not prove

• That the products are good. Neither GST nor Udyam inspects what a business sells.
• That the government has approved or certified the shop. A registration is a record, not an endorsement.
• That delivery will be on time or that returns will be handled well.

Does every online shop need a GST number?

No, and a missing GSTIN is not a red flag by itself. Very small sellers can be below the registration threshold, and plenty of honest home businesses are. What you should be wary of is a shop that prints a number which turns out to be cancelled, belongs to a different name in a different state, or does not exist.

A two-minute checklist for any small online shop

• Find the GSTIN or Udyam number, usually in the footer or on the About page.
• Check the first two digits of the GSTIN against the city the shop gives.
• Search the number on the government portal and confirm it is Active.
• Look for a street address and call or message the phone number.
• Read the returns policy and see whether it says what happens when something arrives damaged.
• Search the shop's name with the word reviews.

If a shop passes all six, it is very unlikely to be a fake storefront. Whether you will like what it sells is a separate question, and the only way to answer that is a small first order.
