Scented Candles: How to Choose, Burn and Gift Them

A practical guide to scented candles in India: which fragrance suits which room, how to get a good scent throw, how to burn them safely, and how to pick one as a gift.

A scented candle does two jobs at once. It is something pretty to look at, and it changes how a room feels the moment you light it. Get the fragrance and the burning right and a ₹200 candle can make a small flat feel like a calm corner of a hotel.

This guide covers the parts people usually find out the hard way: which fragrance suits which room, why some candles barely smell, how to burn one properly, and how to choose one as a gift.

What makes a candle smell?

A scented candle is wax mixed with fragrance oil, with a wick running through it. You notice the fragrance in two ways:

  • Cold throw: how much you smell the candle before it is lit, standing on a shelf or opened from the box.
  • Hot throw: how much fragrance fills the room while it burns. The melted pool of wax around the wick releases the scent as it warms.

A strong cold throw does not always mean a strong hot throw, and the other way round. Room size matters too: a candle that fills a bedroom can disappear in a large living room with the fan on.

Which fragrance for which room

There is no wrong answer, but some fragrances suit some spaces better. A rough guide:

  • Bedroom: soft florals like rose and jasmine (mogra), or warm vanilla. Calm, not sharp.
  • Living room: something people will like without thinking about it: light florals, sandalwood, or a gentle sweet note.
  • Puja corner: sandalwood, rose and jasmine feel natural next to incense and fresh flowers.
  • Bathroom: fresh, clean scents like lemongrass or citrus.
  • Study or work desk: light and fresh rather than heavy, so it does not tire you over a long day.
  • Dining table: go light or skip the scent while eating, so it does not compete with the food.

If you are not sure, florals are the safest choice. Most people in India grow up around rose and jasmine, so they read as familiar rather than strange.

How to get a good scent throw

  • Let the first burn form a full pool. Burn it long enough the first time for the melted wax to reach across the top. A narrow first pool makes the candle tunnel, and a tunnelled candle releases far less fragrance.
  • Burn for 2 to 3 hours. It takes a while for the melted pool to warm up and release its scent. Lighting a candle for ten minutes does very little.
  • Close the room a little. A fan at full speed or wide-open windows carry the fragrance away before you notice it.
  • Pick the right size for the room. One small candle is enough for a bedroom or bathroom. For a larger room, light two or three in different spots.
  • Trim the wick to about 5 mm. A long wick gives a tall, smoky flame that smells of soot, not fragrance.

Burning a scented candle safely

  • Always on a heat-safe plate or holder, never straight on wood, cloth or plastic.
  • Never leave a lit candle alone, and blow it out before you sleep.
  • Keep it away from curtains, fans that blow on the flame, children and pets.
  • Do not burn it right down to the base. Stop when only a thin layer of wax is left.
  • If anyone at home has asthma, allergies or is sensitive to smells, choose a lightly scented candle, keep the room aired, and stop if it bothers them.

Do you have to light a decorative scented candle?

No. Shaped candles, such as roses, peonies and bubble cubes, are often kept as decor and never lit, because the flame melts the shape away. A scented decorative candle still gives off a faint fragrance unlit, especially up close or in a small closed space like a wardrobe shelf or a dressing table.

Many people buy two: one to keep on display and one to burn.

Scented candles as gifts

A candle is one of the safest gifts there is. It suits almost anyone, needs no size, and feels thoughtful without being too personal. A few pointers:

  • Choose the look first, then the scent. People keep a candle that looks lovely on the shelf, whatever it smells like.
  • Go gentle with fragrance when you do not know the person's taste. A light scent pleases more people than a strong one.
  • Match it to the occasion: a red rose candle for an anniversary, a white rose candle for a wedding or a new home, a bubble candle for a friend who likes trendy decor.
  • For festivals, the mithai candle box, with jalebi, imarti and modak, is a gift guests talk about.

Candles are also a smart choice for Diwali gifts under ₹500, housewarming gifts and gifts for your mother-in-law.

Common questions

How long should I burn a scented candle?

Two to three hours at a time. The first burn should be long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges, so the candle does not tunnel.

Why can't I smell my scented candle?

Usually because it has not burned long enough to form a warm pool of wax, the room is too big or too airy, or the candle has tunnelled. Burn it for at least an hour in a smaller, closed room.

Which scented candle is best for the bedroom?

Soft florals such as rose and jasmine, or warm vanilla. Choose something gentle and always blow it out before you sleep.

Can I keep a scented candle without lighting it?

Yes. Decorative scented candles give off a faint fragrance even unlit, and many people keep shaped candles purely as decor.

Are scented candles a good gift?

Yes. They suit almost anyone and every occasion. When you do not know the person's taste, pick a lovely shape and a gentle fragrance.

Are Felofey candles scented?

Yes. Every Felofey candle is scented, with a gentle fragrance when lit and a faint one on display.
