What Is Crochet, and Why Felofey Makes Everything by Hand
Team Felofey · 1 Oct 2026

Crochet, amigurumi and knitting are not the same thing. What the difference is, why crochet cannot be made by machine, and what that means for the price and the wait.
Here is a fact that explains most of how Felofey works: crochet cannot be made by machine. Not "is usually not" — cannot. Nobody has built one.
Knitting machines have existed since 1589. Every knitted jumper you own came off one. But crochet works one loop at a time, with each stitch pulled through the last by a single hook, and that sequence has never been mechanised. If something is genuinely crocheted, a person made it.
Crochet, knitting and amigurumi
- Knitting uses two needles and holds many live loops at once. It makes stretchy, even fabric — jumpers, socks, scarves.
- Crochet uses one hook and holds a single live loop. The fabric is denser and holds a shape, which is why it suits small sculptural things: flowers, keychains, coasters.
- Amigurumi is Japanese for small crocheted stuffed figures. Our crocheted bunny is amigurumi; the rose next to it is not.
A quick test if you are shopping: look at the surface. Knitting shows rows of little V shapes. Crochet shows chunkier interlocking knots. If something is sold cheaply as "crochet" and the surface is all neat Vs, it is knitted, and probably machine-made.
Why cotton yarn and not acrylic
Almost all cheap craft yarn is acrylic — plastic, essentially. It is cheaper, shinier, and stretches out of shape. At Felofey we use cotton yarn, which holds its shape, takes colour deeply, softens with use instead of pilling, and washes without going limp.
That matters most for things that get handled daily: a keychain lives in a bag, a coaster meets wet glasses, hair accessories meet damp hair. Acrylic does badly at all three.
What hand-making means for price and wait
Yarn is cheap. Hands are not. A crochet keychain is a few hours of work; a single rose, including the calyx, wrapped stem and leaves, is about forty minutes; a twelve-stem bouquet is the better part of two days.
That is the whole explanation for three things customers ask about:
- Why ₹169 for a keychain. It is a few hours of someone’s time, not a moulding machine.
- Why colours sell out and come back. Stock is made, not ordered from a warehouse.
- Why dated orders need a week. Nothing exists until it is made.
Why no two are identical
Stitch tension changes slightly with the hour and the hand. Dye lots differ between batches. Two crochet roses from the same yarn will never be exactly the same.
We think that is the point, and we would rather say so before you order than after. Genuinely wrong — damaged, defective or not what you ordered — is a different matter, and covered by our returns policy.
Looking after it
Hand-wash in cool water, reshape while damp, dry flat, and keep it out of long direct sunlight. That is essentially all of it. The full routine is in our guide to washing and caring for crochet accessories.
Common questions
Is crochet machine made?
No. There is no crochet machine. Anything described as machine-made crochet is knitted fabric, or crochet-look fabric made another way.
Is crochet the same as knitting?
No — one hook versus two needles, and a denser fabric that holds shape. See the comparison above.
What does Felofey make?
Crochet keychains, hair accessories, bookmarks, coasters, lip balm holders, flower pots and bouquets, plus hand-poured candles. All made in our Delhi studio and delivered across India. More about Felofey.
Can crochet get wet?
Cotton crochet handles water fine and dries flat. Avoid hot water and wringing, which distort the stitches.
Have a look at the full crochet collection — most pieces are ₹149 to ₹449, and every one of them was made by hand.
