Crochet Hair Accessories: Scrunchies, Bandanas and Clips That Are Kinder to Your Hair

Why crochet behaves differently from elastic and metal in hair, which style suits which hair type, and how to wash a scrunchie so it keeps its shape.

Most hair damage is not from heat or colour. It is from the thing holding your hair up all day. A thin elastic concentrates tension into one narrow band, and that is where breakage starts.

Crochet behaves differently, for a reason worth understanding before you buy.

Why crochet is gentler

Two properties, both from the structure rather than the material.

  • It spreads tension. A crocheted scrunchie is wide and soft, so the pressure is distributed across a broad band instead of a single line. No dent when you take it out, and far less snapping.
  • It grips without teeth. Crochet fabric is textured, so clips and bandanas hold by friction rather than by biting into the hair. Metal clips with teeth are what tear strands near the root.

If you are growing your hair out or dealing with breakage, this matters more than any serum.

Which style for which hair

  • Thick or curly hair — a bandana. It holds volume without squeezing, and it works on second-day hair where a band would slip.
  • Fine or slippery hair — a bow clip or the floral oval clip. Friction holds where a full band would slide out by lunchtime.
  • Everyday ponytails — a ruffle scrunchie. The ruffle adds width, which is exactly what spreads the tension.
  • When you do not know their hair — a scrunchie. It is the one style that works on almost everyone, which makes it the safe gift.

All our hair accessories are ₹149 and crocheted by hand in cotton yarn, with elastic only where the design needs stretch.

Why cotton and not acrylic

Most cheap scrunchies are acrylic or polyester — plastic, which does not absorb and does not breathe. Against damp hair after a wash that matters: cotton takes up the moisture and dries, synthetic traps it against the strand.

Cotton also keeps its shape. Acrylic stretches out after a few months and never goes back. Ours are cotton for exactly these reasons.

How to wash them

  1. Cool water, by hand. Hot water relaxes the stitches and the piece loses its shape permanently.
  2. A drop of mild shampoo is enough — it is the same thing your hair was washed with.
  3. Squeeze, never wring. Wringing twists the stitch structure out of alignment.
  4. Reshape while damp with your fingers, back to the shape it arrived in.
  5. Dry flat, out of the sun. Hanging a wet scrunchie stretches it under its own weight.

Never put crochet in a washing machine or a dryer. The full routine for every crochet piece is in our guide to washing and caring for crochet accessories.

A note on monsoon

Cotton holds damp, and a scrunchie worn on wet hair through a humid Delhi July will stay damp all day if you let it. Keep two and alternate, and let each dry fully. That is the whole trick.

As a gift

Hair accessories are one of the easier handmade gifts to get right, because they do not need a size and almost everyone uses them. At ₹149 they also work in quantity — several people order a mix as return gifts for a function.

Common questions

Will a crochet scrunchie hold thick hair?

Yes — the ruffle styles especially. The width is what gives the grip.

Do they stretch out over time?

Cotton holds its shape far better than acrylic. Washing in hot water or machine-drying is what ruins them.

Can I wear one in the shower or swimming?

Better not. Prolonged soaking, and chlorine in particular, is hard on cotton and on the elastic inside.

What sizes do they come in?

One size. That is part of why they make good gifts — nothing to get wrong.
